Experienced Topper racer, Oliver (Year 11) achieved 3rd overall (1st boy) having racked up a 2nd, 3rd and a 4th in three of the five races he sailed – a consistently strong performance in trying conditions.

Third place out of a total fleet of 72 is a result to be proud of, especially as this was his last Youth Championships sailing a Topper – he is moving on up to Lasers for winter training with Ballyholme Yacht Club and Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club.

Oliver has been reflecting on his progress since his first Youth Championships back in 2015 when he was in Year 8. He came 50th that year and getting a bronze medal this year demonstrates enormous progression in the most closely contested youth regatta in Northern Ireland. It must be inspiring for our new Laser sailors in Year 9 who were unfortunately confined to shore as the wind was just too strong for the Regatta Fleet. However,

well done on your fifth place in the onshore quiz Charlie and Hollie! Jack’s racing class, Radial, was also hindered by the wind but he did manage to get on the water for one race in pretty hairy conditions. Well done to all our sailors and their dedicated onshore support teams.
