Rugby: The final report!Coach Coey has penned his report for our U14 Danske Bank High Schools’ Trophy final win (see below). He is pretty pleased and why wouldn’t he be? In addition to the team’s success, we’ve just learned he has also been nominated as North Down Sports Coach of the Year. We are all hoping for another win Mr Coey!

Trophy Final - Match Report:

“Bangor Academy arrived at Belfast Harlequins RFC in a positive frame of mind looking forward to play in the final of the U14 Trophy against Clounagh Junior High School, Portadown.

Bangor started well and had Clounagh under a lot of pressure resulting in a scrum 5m out from the Clounagh line. Tyler Mahaffy’s pick-up from number 8 was fantastic and he crashed over the try line with 2 of the opposition team hanging on to him!

This score seem to help Clounagh more than the Academy who eventually crossed the Academy line after 20 minutes, the first half ending 5-7 to Clounagh.

The second half started with Bangor looking more hungry for the ball and some creative backs’ play allowed Kailen Cantly to cross over the try line which he converted. With the score now 12-7 to Bangor, the boys relaxed and started to use the ball and space resulting in Scott Rolston scoring. Although the conversion was missed, Bangor’s confidence was growing and with the score now 17-7 we had one hand on the trophy.

The boys’ defence and attitude in the closing minutes of the game was exceptional. When the referee blew the final whistle, the boys were able to celebrate and be very proud of what they had achieved.

A big thanks to all those who made the day so special, not to mention all the travelling spectators; pupils, teachers and family supporters who came to see a day our players will not forget.”
