Learning objectives:

Key stage 3:
Key Stage 3 pupils study a general science course in line with the Northern Ireland revised curriculum.

The subject content for KS 3 science is as follows;

Year 8 – Introduction to science ,  Particles and separating techniques, Using and testing material, Living things, Reproduction and genetics
Year 9 – Healthy eating and digestion, Energy, Acids, alkalis and gases, Environment, Light and sound.
Year10 – Biodiversity, Chemical reactions, Healthy body and healthy mind, Using electricity, Forces.

Key stage 4: GCSE
At Key Stage 4 pupils can choose to study CCEA Double or Single Award Science or a BTEC level 2 First Award in Principles of Applied Science

Key stage 5: AS/A2 Level
AS/A2 CCEA Biology or BTEC level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science

Subject/Departmental pupil  achievements:
Congratulations to Curtis and Chloe who achieved a Gold Crest Award after completing Sentinus summer research placement

Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities:
Pet club and Stem club each meet monthly

Educational visits and trips:
Year 8 study habitats and animal adaptations at Castle Espie

The seashore at Crawfordsburn and Castle Park are widely used with groups studying flora, fauna, adaptations etc.

Fronter courses are currently under development – at present a course is available for AQA GCSE students to assist in preparation for the Centre Assessed Unit / Investigative Skills Assignment

Cross Curricular Skills and Careers:
Throughout each Key Stage pupils are given opportunities to develop skills in Communication, Using Maths and Using ICT.  These include opportunities for creative writing, applying mathematics in scientific and everyday situations, use of sense and control software in scientific contexts and the use of software programmes to enhance and consolidate learning.  

Careers stemming from individual science subjects are highlighted to pupils and STEM events are encouraged for pupils to explore careers which require a relevant science qualification.
